Overview
A student majoring in another discipline may earn an academic minor in Portuguese. With Portuguese ranked among the four most spoken languages in South Florida, the program offers students the opportunity to develop advanced linguistic proficiency while preparing to apply their knowledge in professional, cultural, and academic contexts.

Prerequisites and Placement
The Portuguese minor requires 18 credits of upper-division coursework (advanced level). To qualify for these advanced courses, students may:

  • Complete the accelerated Portuguese sequence (POR 3202 and POR 3233), or
  • Complete the regular language sequence (POR 1130 through POR 2200), or
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Portuguese and be placed directly into advanced courses through a placement evaluation with the program coordinator.

If you already speak Portuguese or have significant prior experience, this minor is an excellent way to formalize your skills and apply them to your academic and career goals.

Credits and Structure
  • 18 credits are required in total.
  • 15 credits must come from Portuguese core courses (POR 3400 level or above).
